PSTN versus VoIP  the difference

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) also known as conventional standard telephone line technology has become too old and lacks many features. Whereas VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a new technology and becoming very popular amongst individuals and businesses due to the fact that VoIP has many features to offer. PSTN line which normally has 1 pair of twisted wire and it can only accomodate 1 telephone line whereaas VoIP runs on top of Internet connection and can carry as many lines as you wish provided that there is sufficient internet bandwidth to support provisioning of additional VoIP lines. Refering to 1 Mbps (mega bytes per second) QoS internet connection, it can carry upto 126 carrier grade telephone lines by using G.723 compression speech codecs.

Why VoIP?

In 21st century's era if you are not utilizing VoIP at home or business then certainly you are making a mistake by using expensive and out-dated traditional PSTN telephone technology. VoIP service is very cost effective and has so many features that you can benefit from. Some VoIP providers offer free unlimited calls to various countries, lets talk how PSTN is expensive than VoIP. For example if I make a telephone call from United Kingdom to San Francisco - California by using traditional PSTN its costs 10 pence per minute whereas if I choose to make the same call by using VoIP call costs 0 pence per minute. Frankly saying that the VoIP is the best choice when it comes to choosing telephone service and saving money. Benefits of VoIP

As mentioned earlier that the VoIP is much cheaper than traditional PSTN and it promises unlimited free local and long distance calls. You can also use your mobile phone to make and receive VoIP calls while you are roaming. Some providers also offer 2nd line free which means you can have multiple telephone lines at home or office while you are only paying for the one line. On-net calls are normally free, for example if you have family or family abroad or in other state you both can utilize VoIP to call each other which will be totally free. In addition of above mentioned benefits there are many others features. Please click here to read more VoIP features.

How VoIP works

When you place a VoIP call your speech are translated into computer binary streams which gets transmitted via set of routers, network switches and intelligent computers, and when transmitted binary data stream arrives at the final destination this is afterward once again translated into plain speech. That is how VoIP call conversation are terminated over Internet Protocol networks.

What equipment is required for VoIP?

When we talk about VoIP people suddenly think a computer is required for VoIP to work, bear in mind that the computer is not required for VoIP to function. You will need an ATA (analog telephone adapter) and a traditional telephone handset. ATA is the main brain of VoIP which converts your voice speech into data packets.

Alternatively if you dont want to use ATA then you may want to use a computer to make and receive phone calls. But it is highly recommended that you use a ATA device or SIP / IAX compliant device to make and receive VoIP calls.

You must be thinking why there is a computer in the abovee picture - well you still want your high speed internet, right? You can surf the web while your family talk to their friends on the phone.

If you have more than one phone in your home the recommended connection is to use cordless telephones. The base station of the cordless telephone plugs directly into the VoIP ATA. The additional handsets can then be placed anywhere in your home, distributing the VoIP phone service to your required locations.

VoIP on Wireless Internet

For a better quality VoIP at least 400 milliseconds in circles journey latency is mandatory, various wireless internet service providers latency is more than 600 milliseconds. If your wireless internet service provider latency is fewer than 400ms it follows that certainly you may consume VoIP on wireless internet connection. But this is strongly recommended that you use fast fixed line internet line for superior quality VoIP.

FAX over VoIP

Fax is supported with VoIP by using T.38 fax passthrough protocols. If you are planning on connecting fax to your VoIP please check with your VoIP service provider wheather FAX of VoIP is supportted.

911 over VoIP

Although 911 calls placed over VoIP are unreliable. Furthermore, emergency services  will not be able to track your location, as opposed when you are making use of a standard PSTN phone. If you want to substitute your standard phone line with VoIP service, please consider making use of your cellular phone as an alternative of your VoIP to call 911.
